Her prefab home is undoubtedly the nicest in their area, but still is in a street dubbed 'Shantytown' by her Grammar School classmates. However, in the 1960s women who are unmarried or young are treated very different to today for becoming pregnant. A heartbreaking, compelling and timely story for older readers about teen pregnancy and its consequences, family trouble and unlikely friendships, set in 1960. This book was brilliant in that it showed the judgement and pressures of teenage pregnancy in the 1960's, then cleverly linking back to present date with an article at the end about sexual consent in the present day. i started reading it this afternoon and when i say it was unputdownable i literally mean that i read for 3 hours straight and finished it.

Attending the school on a scholarship due to her excellent grades, Laura hides her address from Nina as long as she can. Premessa: Jaqueline Wilson e´ l´autrice che mi ha accompagnato per tutta la mia infanzia, quindi il mio giudizio e´ influenzato da il mio personale attaccamento nostalgico.

This book is aimed at older readers than Jacqueline Wilson’s usual target audience so do beat that in mind. So how would I sun this up … honest , gut wrenching yet sweet at times , emotional and heartbreaking! One day, whilst out with her friend at the lido, Laura meets Leon and although she isn’t that interested in him, she does let him walk her home after a tiff with her friend. Nina immediately looks at ease and trying to match her confident friend, Laura agrees to one of the boys walking her home, including a detour on the way. Candy Gourlay introduces Wild Song, her companion novel to Bone Talk, in which Luki and Samkad leave their home in the Philippines for America.

The tiny illustrations that accompany the beginning of chapters remind readers the tale follows a young girl, as Laura’s advanced literacy enables readers to forget her youth. At only 14, still very naive and incredibly homesick, Laura meets other girls her mother would label “Rough,” or “Tarts” or “Unsuitable,” who in fact are caring, and friendly. Wilson's writing style is warm and despite the heavy subject matter there are lots of charming and humorous moments throughout the story. I find JW’s writing so easy to fall into, I am always immersed in the world and the characters, I definitely felt all the emotions. What follows is a well-paced, emotional and intermittently heartwarming journey, one which will teach the value of families and friendships look like, the importance of consent and a good sex education. Her prefab home is undoubtedly the nicest in their area, but still is in a street dubbed ‘Shantytown’ by her Grammar School classmates. The connection you feel with all of the characters is almost immediate and you can't help but feel your own heart break throughout the book.

Nina has two brothers, Little Richard (nicknamed after the singer) and older brother Daniel, who is always kind and friendly.

The narrative totally draws you in and the storyline keeps you guessing where life will take Laura and Kathleen.
