A walk can be what you make it – you can walk the dog, walk the kids to school or simply go for a walk in your lunch break; whatever it is you’re always winning. For those who want to add that little bit more; a slightly more strenuous, time-consuming adventure, Alfred Wainwright has done the hard work for you. All you have to do is walk. Alfred Wainwright is probably best known for his Guidebooks but, when the total bibliography is inspected, his writing and, particularly his drawings are seen to be of at least equal importance. His reputation and the popularity of his work has of course led to numerous other books which are based on his achievements and story. The Society has never set out to be a ‘collector’ of his books or memorabilia; it is not in our constitution. Where we have had the opportunity to acquire items which are in themselves unique and contain original material we have, on a very selective basis, tried to do so and, where successful, donated these to the Cumbria Archive to enable future generations to be able to see them. Another reason is that many walkers struggle to devise full-day walks using the Wainwright guide books. Yes, he has detailed pretty much every conceivable way of getting to each individual summit, but this leaves the reader having to then come up with their own plan to make a longer day of it by continuing over one or more other fells. Wainwright didn’t describe day walks in these seven guidebooks.

The Outlying Fells of Lakeland (an idea he had previously rejected), published in 1974, was his last major guidebook. Thereafter he concentrated on sketchbooks of larger-size line drawings until his eyesight began to fail in the mid-1980s. His Ex-Fellwanderer, an autobiographical work published in 1987, was intended to be his last written work, but he continued to lend his name and some written commentary to a series of " coffee table books" featuring the photography of Derry Brabbs. You can climb this small fell, only 469m, from either Great Langdale or Little Langdale. Either way you are greeted by ‘The Great Wall of Lingmoor’ at the summit, as well as a glimpse of the surrounding fells, which as always make for good viewing. Wainwright, Alfred (2003) [1973]. A Coast to Coast Walk. London: Frances Lincoln. ISBN 978-0-7112-2236-6. The Wainwright Bridge". The Wainwright Society. 10 April 2008. Archived from the original on 12 June 2008 . Retrieved 19 January 2018.In addition to the above works, many other books contain previously published illustrations by Wainwright, or whose subject matter has been inspired by his life and works. The book is arranged in sections corresponding to each of the seven volumes of Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells, and begins with three walks that take in only one fell each, indicative of the fact it’s not always easy to link Wainwrights for a day’s walking. The publishers announced in 2014 that Clive Hutchby, the author of The Wainwright Companion, was working on the third edition of the Pictorial Guide, with the first volume, The Eastern Fells, published on 26 March 2015 followed by The Far Eastern Fells on 8 October 2015. These revised versions are titled 'Walkers Editions'. [12] [13] Subsequent volumes in the series to have been revised are The Central Fells (published 2016), The Southern Fells (2017), The Northern Fells (2018); The North Western Fells (2019); and The Western Fells (2020). You can do them more than once! Why do we need a guide book on the fells of the Lake District if Wainwright wrote seven of them? Well, I should say right here that this book is not intended to replace Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides. They are superb books. But, they were written in the 1950s and 60s, and yes, some things in the hills have changed in the intervening years.

In this book you’ll find 64 routes that, if you complete them all, by default you will also have completed the Wainwrights. A few of the summits are featured in more than one walk. That’s ok. The Godfather of the Lake District, Albert Wainwright, mapped, documented and published a staggering 214 fells, of varying lengths and climbs, with descriptions so delicately written, you’d think he were a poet. He “raises his proud and venerable head to the sky,” writes Wainwright, “his tears are shed quietly into Low Water and Goats Water, two splendid tarns, whence, in due course… find their way into Coniston’s lake, and there bathe his ancient feet.” The virtues of Helm Crag have not been lauded enough. It gives an exhilarating little climb, a brief essay in real mountaineering, and, in a region where all is beautiful, it makes a notable contribution to the natural charms and attractions of Grasmere”.Another gate later and you continue to your right and then left along a zigzag path. You’ll eventually come to some stone steps which you follow until you reach the summit. 7. Skiddaw Sitting under 300m in height, Borrowdale’s Castle Crag features a famous cave, a war memorial and a spooky old quarry, which adds a sense of intrigue to the climb. And like many of the smaller Wainwrights, you are more than rewarded at the summit with views to savour in every direction.
