About this deal

Quite a memoir of a woman who had quite an adventurous life after an idyllic childhood. A broken engagement to her first love, rape, pregnancy, giving the child up for adoption, another child who died just after birth, 4 marriages, several different careers, danger, travel.....and then ending up with her first love anyway, 20 years later. Through it all she read books that helped her escape. At the age of 70, she opened up Two Wee Book Shops in Manapouri, New Zealand, literally the end of the world.

end-of-the-world novels – from Ballard to Pratchett Top 10 end-of-the-world novels – from Ballard to Pratchett

In 2019, Ruth decided she had to add another bookshop – one just for children, where they could stretch out while they read, and borrow books if they liked. Doomsday scares take two main forms. There are Christians who think in terms of the last judgement, the rapture and the return of Jesus; and there are secular end-timers who think the world could be hit by a stray meteor, invaded by aliens or zapped by freak radiation. There are fervent believers of both kinds who feel an urgent need to tell the world of their fears in the hope that the doubters will believe and be saved. When it’s busy, Ruth sits outside to let one or two more booklovers squeeze in. And if there’s still an overflow, she sends people next door, where Lance makes them a hot drink until there’s room in the bookshop. The ancient Mayan astronomers could have had no understanding of how, at the end of what we know as the year 2012, their projected calendar would be the subject of intense, international interest. Yet translations of their calculations, made by scholars over the last century, have resulted in a rumour that has been heard by millions. The world will end four days before Christmas. Or, at least, the world as we now know it will end. Perhaps, some say, it will be the dawn of a new enlightened age. THE CABIN AT THE END OF THE WORLD is now my favorite among the works of Paul Tremblay. The writing here was powerful and my heart is still healing from the major break it suffered while I was reading this book, and as such: I highly recommend it!

The Bookseller at the End of the World eBook : Shaw, Ruth

This was my first Paul Tremblay novel, and I am not disappointed. The synopsis above is really just a delightful tease that gives away nothing about what you're about to get yourself into. So, I recommend going in blind with faith that things properly descend into the horrifying realm. Wen knows she is not supposed to talk to strangers, but this man seems nice and eventually gets her to let her guard down. It's not until his friends appear that Wen realizes something is horribly wrong. Ruth Shaw weaves together stories of the characters who visit her bookshops, musings about favorite books, and bittersweet stories from her full and varied life. Believers who are taken up in the rapture will not die. The rapture can happen at any time, meaning it could happen today, tomorrow, or a thousand years from now. Only God knows when the rapture will occur, and He has not given us that information in the Bible. Believers should continue to do good, live for Christ, and share the gospel with others until this time. 3. The Tribulation Any fine meal is composed of a range of ingredients. Here we have the terror of the invaded, the unexpected facets of the invaders and a big, overarching scare. Is it real or not? But there are other items spicing up this read. There is consideration of faith, religion, and how far one will go in service of one’s beliefs. It is tough not to see the four horsemen imagery in the four invaders, but there are other, more subtle spices at play. A motif of sevens permeates. There are sundry references to other novels that offer some food for thought. Tim O’Brien’s Lake of the Woods is one. There are others. Do we believe what we see or see what we believe?

The literal 1,000-year reign of Christ will come after the Rapture of the church and the Tribulation. After the end of the 1,000-year reign of Christ, God will destroy the earth with fire and create a New Heaven and a New Earth ( 2 Peter 3:10; Revelation 21:1). 2. The Rapture Before you go inside to your dads, you have to listen to me. This is important…You are a beautiful person, inside and out. One of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met, Wen. Your family is perfect and beautiful, too. Please know that. This isn’t about you. It’s about everyone…None of what’s going to happen is your fault. You haven’t done anything wrong, but the three of you will have to make some tough decisions. Terrible decisions, I’m afraid. I wish with all my broken heart you didn’t have to…Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. Tell them they have to. We are not here to hurt you. We need your help to save the world…”
