There are no tobacco notes in this fragrance so I'm not sure why I get the ashtray vibe. Some of the other listed notes (from Fragrantica, see below) I can't detect - I don't get clove like Jacomo de Jacomo, I don't get oakmoss like Drakkar Noir, I don't get cinnamon like Witness. Hopefully someone with a more refined olfactory palate will try this (and recover in time to write another review.) It opens up with this wonderful soapy green clean scent. It's somewhat nostalgic, as it clearly is from another era, but it's just pleasant to the nose. Very fresh. As it dries down it becomes more woody and takes on a bit of a dirty characteristic in the middle. If you've tried current Azzaro PH or Aramis that same "dirty" aspect those two have are also in Mandate. Sometimes fresh is sexy. This soapy fragrance has never been a panty-dropper in the sense of designer fragrances and it still isn't. It isn't mysterious or inviting or any other of that hyperbole. What it does is make the wearer feel good and fresh and those around him appreciate just a good clean scent. This is great stuff. Not an "easy" scent-initially quite heavy, deep, complex and masculine, but very well balanced. Feels refined. A very clean, confident and quite fresh smelling, sophisticated, manly smell once it settles. All that said, I do enjoy wearing this from time to time. It's a really in your face masculine cheapie, with a distinctive scent that progesses in a linear fashion for what seems like weeks.
