One of the most difficult garden activities to do is grow tomatoes in tomato cages. If you want to make changes to the way you approach the tomato cage, I recommend doing so completely. You’ll be having a literal feast of tomatoes as you grow them vertically and prune them on a regular basis, and then plant tomato companion plants. To support and grow my tomatoes vertically, I use simple and inexpensive methods. The materials used here are very low-cost and can be stored vertically next to the garden throughout the off-season. A trellis provides excellent support for tomato plants and their fruit, as well as for the plants’ growing process. Tomatoes can grow in tomato cages, but they can also be grown in other containers with less space than those used for tomatoes. You can help tomato plants grow by using stakes, tripods, ladders, and fences as part of the garden.

Another way to support peonies is with plant support hoops, which completely encircle a peony clump and provide it with some support. It was a heavier gauge wire than other tomato cages but the others could work as well. After some testing, I will let you know how they work. However, when the rain comes down, peonies all across the city start flopping down. They just can’t handle the weight of the water. When first installed, they will be noticeable and if they are attractive, all the better, but ideally the plant should grow into the structure and be barely noticeable by flowering time. This year, I am so excited to add another peony, this one a gorgeous hot pink color … Edulis Superba. You can also use this method for supporting peonies that are already blooming, to prop up any flowers that are already drooping, or to support peonies that are too tall for commercial cages. How To Make Peony Plant Supports Step-By-Step If we were just supporting the peony bush then the ring would be sufficient but supporting the big blousy flowers takes a little more added to the top ring of the cage. No assembly required — You don’t have to worry about fiddling with spanners or screws. Your peony cage will arrive as a solid piece of raw or plastic-coated steel. The best peony support rings have a grid for a reason. If this did not have the grid they would just lean all around the peony ring instead of holding up their blooms. But I found pulling the wire over the top of the ring in a 5-point star pattern was faster and easier. (please see video).

There are many types of supports but I like peony grids. They come in a few different sizes so choose the one right for your size shrub. One popular type of encircling support structure for peonies are cage supports which are not cylindrical in shape, but taper from the base out to a wider circumference at the top. The best time to provide support for your peony bushes is before they need it, meaning early Spring.

Cut your peony down to the ground in late fall or after frost has killed the leaves (don’t cut it down in the spring or summer or it may not bloom next spring)! These fluted supports allow peony clumps to develop and sit more naturally, catering to their growth and form. When your peony bush is done blooming and you’ve removed all the dead flowers, leave it alone until fall. Tomato cages are rusted, bent, and virtually useless. Maintain an old tomato cage to keep wind-affected plants and young seeds out. Place the plant over the top of the cage with clear plastic cover over the bottom third. Young plants are more likely to survive if they are protected from predators by this method. You might notice a lot of them munching on your plants’ leaves or digging up newly sprouted seeds. Wrap bird nets around your cage and plant to keep animals out. This year, I grew cucumbers, peas, pumpkins, watermelon, spaghetti and acorn squash, and watermelons in my old cages.

Before installation, you should measure the diameter of the cage to ensure it fits snugly on your peonies. Be sure to place them firmly around each plant, approximately 3-4 inches from the plant’s crown. How to Install Peony Support Cages Getting into the habit of adding your peony plant supports before your plant even start to grow will make it much easier to keep the flowers from flopping every spring. If peonies don’t have support, the big blooms will cause them to flop onto the ground and they won’t last long. Also, rain likes to batter peonies into the ground which is yet another reason to support them. When purchasing a peony cage, it is important to keep in mind the size of your peonies as they require plenty of space and air circulation to grow. Tomato cages are the ideal enclosure for both indeterminate and determinate tomatoes. Tomatoes are usually taller when determining their height, reaching three to five feet in height. They harvest one of their biggest harvests after putting off the majority of their fruit during a shorter period of time.
